At age 53, I embarked on a fitness journey rather than simply a weight loss journey, as I had previously done. In 2020, a conversation with my gynecologist left a lasting impact on me. She conveyed that I wouldn't be seeing her in the coming year and explained that my annual weight gain was putting me at risk for chronic illnesses. At that time, I was navigating the challenges of menopause. I struggled to control my weight despite feeling I wasn't overeating. I was distraught and depressed regarding my situation. I tried every diet and attempted but failed several times to start a fitness program. I bought every cardio machine but lost interest quickly, so I turned to gastric surgery as a hopeful path to regain control.
After the surgery, I lost a lot of weight—over 100 pounds—but it came at the cost of losing significant muscle mass. Though I was lighter, I didn't feel or look my best. In search of another solution, I discovered a women-only gym that promised a supportive environment for rebuilding strength. Surrounded by uplifting women, I went from barely lifting 5 pounds to, in most moves, being able to lift 20-25 pounds. This transformation was not just physical, but it also empowered me mentally in ways I never thought possible.
I cherished this supportive environment for over a year; it had become my third home, improving my physical health and nurturing deep friendships. Believing in a new purpose, I want to guide and uplift other women to help them go on a supported fitness journey, I left my corporate job. I wanted to create a space that had helped me so much, a place where women could find support and inspiration on their fitness journey. Therefore, Not Your Typical Gym was created.
We are not typical because we specialize in providing women focused workouts that boost your metabolic rate through muscle toning, helping you achieve your fitness goals and feel confident. We are also a gym that gives back to the community through monthly charity projects and informative workshops. This gym is the third home for many women, a place where they cannot only work on their physical health but also find support, knowledge, and a sense of belonging. I want all women to believe that to care for the world around them; they must first learn to love and care for themselves.
